New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday observed that Governors in states must act even before the matter comes to the apex court.  Court today heard the plea of Punjab Government against the Governor Banwarilal Purohit. CJI DY Chandrachud said this should come to an end that, Governor act only when the case is in the supreme court.

A bench of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justices J.B. Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra heard the plea, which also sought directions to the governor to clear all pending bills that have been passed by the Assembly. Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appearing for the Punjab government said the four bills were sent to the Governor on June 26. The letter was sent by the Governor to CM Mann raising objection to the convening of the session.

The Supreme Court reprimanded Governor Purohit and asked why the matter reaches the court every time. Why doesn’t the Governor coordinate with the government? The Supreme Court said that the Governor should have resolved the matter before it escalated further. The Supreme Court has asked the Governor to file his reply by November 10. The CJI said that governors should not remain ignorant of the fact that they are not elected officials. Why do governors take action on bills only after state governments approach courts? Stop it.
