Chandigarh: Punjabi social media influencer Manjeet Kaur, 28, died at PGIMER, Chandigarh, on August 26, nearly two months after she was allegedly abducted from Chandigarh, assaulted and set on fire near Morinda. Following her death, Chandigarh Police registered a case of kidnapping and murder against two persons named by her family.
What Happened to Manjeet Kaur?
According to a complaint filed by her mother, the incident took place on July 3. She alleged that two acquaintances, identified as Shubhi and Pinda, called Manjeet to Sector 34 in Chandigarh and allegedly took her away in a car.
The family alleged that she was taken to a forested area near Morinda, where she was assaulted, tied to a mulberry tree and allegedly set on fire. A friend reportedly reached the spot and helped extinguish the flames before she was taken to hospital.
Manjeet was initially treated at a hospital in Morinda and later at Max Hospital, Mohali, before being shifted to PGIMER, Chandigarh, on July 9. She battled severe burn injuries for 54 days before succumbing during treatment.
Family Raises Questions Over Police Response
The case has also raised questions over the handling of the investigation. Manjeet reportedly regained consciousness on August 5, and her family alleged that she wanted to record her statement before her condition deteriorated.
Her mother has questioned why her statement was not recorded while she was alive. Police, however, have denied allegations of negligence and said the investigation is underway.
