The True Story – The Purple Potato The real change is not in the color of the potato.
The real change is in the farmer’s mindset. The story of a young man from Punjab and the purple potato — When the mindset changes, farming also sows gold. Punjab is often viewed today through just one lens — drugs, gangsters, and unemployment.
But the truth is that even on this land of Punjab, there are still young people who are writing new stories with their education, thinking, and hard work. Punjab’s purple potato success story is exactly like that.A 27-year-old young man has proven that
When youth and science come together, the land can still produce gold. Gurjot Singh, a 27-year-old from Matta village in Faridkot, is a living example of this. Four years ago, he stepped out of the traditional wheat-paddy cycle and started cultivating purple potatoes. Today, he has become an inspiration for farmers across Punjab. Gurjot Singh began this farming on about 45 acres four years ago. Now, he earns a profit of approximately Rs 6 lakh to Rs 20 lakh per acre in a year. The magic of a small idea —
Gurjot says that he first saw these purple potatoes in a mall. That day, a thought came to his mind:
“If this can happen in foreign countries, then why not in Punjab?” To turn that thought into reality, he imported the seeds from Bolivia.
And today, this purple potato has become a revolution born from Gurjot Singh’s mindset. Background of the Purple Potato —
The purple potato is not an ordinary crop. It was originally grown in Bolivia and Peru in South America, where it has been cultivated for centuries. It is rich in powerful antioxidants like anthocyanin and Vitamin C — meaning it gives health as well as a good market. While farmers often end up in loss with traditional crops, purple potatoes can generate Rs 6 lakh to Rs 20 lakh per acre.It also proves that when youth and science come together, the soil produces gold.
That is why in 2024, India developed its own variety called “Kufri Jamunia”. This too proves that when youth and science unite, a revolution can happen even in farming. A Big Message for PunjabGurjot Singh’s story is not just the success of one young man…
It is a message for every youth in Punjab. Changing Punjab doesn’t happen just by changing governments…
We have to change our own mindset. Then this land of Punjab can still grow gold, If our youth get the right direction and opportunities.
