Punjab’s ‘Zero Bill Revolution’: 300 units of free electricity for every household, uninterrupted supply for farmers

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government has realised the dream of affordable and stable electricity in Punjab. Starting from July 2022, every domestic consumer will receive 300 units of free electricity per month, providing relief to millions of families.

According to government data, on average, each household is saving between ₹1,500 and ₹2,000 per month. Gurmeet Kaur from Jalandhar says, “Earlier, I used to get a ₹2,000 bill every month. Now, with a zero bill, I can spend that amount on my children’s education.”

The agricultural sector has also directly benefited from this policy. Amrik Singh, a farmer from Fatehgarh Sahib, says that he now receives 24-hour uninterrupted power for irrigation purposes, reducing expenditure on generators and diesel.

To increase the state’s energy capacity, the government has acquired the 540 MW Goindwal Thermal Plant in Tarn Taran, now renamed the Sri Guru Amardas Thermal Power Plant. Spread across 1,100 acres, this plant is proving to be the backbone of Punjab’s self-reliant energy plan.

Chief Minister Mann said, “Our goal is not just free electricity, but to create an energy system that makes life easier for the people and strengthens the state’s economy.”
