New Delhi: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is expected to travel to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi by the end of the year, according to an official from the Russian Embassy in India. No dates have been finalized yet. Roman Babushkin, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Russian Embassy, said Modi and Putin would also hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, slated for the end of the month.
The news follows a recent phone conversation between Modi and Putin in which they discussed Putin’s meeting with United States President Donald Trump in Alaska regarding the war in Ukraine. Modi described Trump as a “friend” and reiterated India’s call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, adding that New Delhi supports all efforts toward that end.
In a post on X, Modi thanked his “friend” Putin for the call and insights into the Alaska meeting, while emphasizing India’s stance on seeking a peaceful Ukraine settlement and acknowledging ongoing exchanges with Moscow.
The timing of Putin’s planned visit coincides with concerns over new U.S. tariffs announced by Trump, including a 50% levy, partly aimed at pressuring Russia over the Ukraine war.
