Delhi BJP Minority Morcha Demands Rahul Gandhi’s Apology, Says INDIA Bloc Rally Reopened 1984 Sikh Genocide Wounds

New Delhi: Families affected by the 1984 anti-Sikh violence and workers of the Delhi BJP Minority Morcha staged a protest march on Monday demanding an apology from Rahul Gandhi and Congress for the massacre.

“Rahul Gandhi’s rally organised by the INDIA bloc in Delhi on Sunday has opened up old wounds of the Sikh community. Rahul Gandhi should apologise to the nation along with the Congress and see that justice is served to the victims,” Delhi BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said.

The protest march was organised to condemn the killings of Sikhs between October 31 and November 2, 1984, allegedly committed by Congress leaders and workers. The protestors walked from Gurudwara Sri Bangla Sahib to Gurudwara Sri Rakab Ganj Sahib chanting Gurbani, a statement from Delhi BJP said.

The protestors chanted slogans like “India will never forget 1984 Sikh Genocide by Congress.”

West Delhi BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat and BJP leader Rajiv Babbar also participated in the tribute march. Hundreds of Sikh women, Nihang groups, affected families and residents of Tilak Vihar participated.

Candles were lit in memory of those who lost their lives during the 1984 violence at Gurudwara Sri Rakab Ganj Sahib.

BJP Leaders Accuse Congress Of Targeting Sikhs

“After the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi the Sikhs were targeted. They would identify particular households and drag out Sikh families and carry out inhumane atrocities,” Sehrawat said.

“It was not done by common people but by Congress leaders and those who benefitted from their support.”

She accused Rahul Gandhi of opening up old wounds of the Sikh community due to his November 1 politics. Sehrawat also said Sikh families faced injustice during the time of his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and people were encouraged.

“We do not want to open that dark chapter. These families have been speaking up and especially the women who suffered during this time.” she said.

Bansuri Swaraj Describes 1984 Violence As A ‘Pre-planned Conspiracy’

“The killing of Sikh men and women in 1984 was a pre-planned conspiracy by Congress,” Bansuri Swaraj said.

“They say ‘when a big tree falls the ground shakes’ after the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi has the same mentality.”

She said Congress workers and rioters allegedly working under the patronage of the party set fire to members of the Sikh community on November 1, 1984. Swaraj asked why Rahul Gandhi decided to organise a rally on the same day. She added that the Sikh community have been waiting for justice and the Congress have stayed quiet.

However, she did add that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi have given compensation and jobs to affected families and ensured those responsible are punished.

“For example Sajjan Kumar has been convicted. Not one INDIA bloc leader has spoken about the 1984 Sikh violence during Rahul Gandhi’s rally.”
