New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a response from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others on a plea seeking an FIR over allegations that a pregnant journalist was pushed during a march to the court on October 12.
The application seeks legal action against Gandhi and others allegedly involved in the incident, along with compensation for the journalist. The allegations are yet to be established.
The matter was brought before a bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi by senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia, who said the journalist had been manhandled on the Supreme Court premises.
What Does the Plea Say?
According to the application, the journalist was allegedly pushed in a crowded area and fell, using her hands to break her fall. The plea states that the incident took place in the presence of security personnel, journalists and other people.
It further alleges that the push was deliberate and not simply the result of people jostling in the crowd. The application also claims that the journalist had asked those around her to stop the conduct.
Bhatia had raised the issue before the Supreme Court on October 16. At the time, he told the bench that the journalist was three months pregnant and had to be hospitalised after the alleged incident. He urged the court to take up the matter.
The application has now been brought before the bench, which has sought responses from Gandhi and the other respondents. The court has not established the allegations, and the matter remains under consideration.
Why Did Opposition Leaders March to the Supreme Court?
The alleged incident took place on October 12, when Rahul Gandhi and several opposition leaders reached the Supreme Court over concerns about alleged voter deletions and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The march came amid opposition protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process.
The Supreme Court had also issued notices to Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, the Congress party and others on a separate plea challenging the October 12 march.
The latest notice relates specifically to the application concerning the alleged pushing of the journalist. The court will consider the responses of the parties before proceeding further with the matter.
