New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the government to confer the Bharat Ratna posthumously on Bahujan leader Kanshi Ram.
In his letter, Gandhi said the request comes as the country marks Kanshi Ram’s birth anniversary and reflects on his legacy and contributions to Indian politics and society.
Gandhi highlights Kanshi Ram’s contribution
Gandhi said Kanshi Ram, the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party, played a major role in transforming Dalit politics by mobilising marginalised communities and encouraging them to seek political representation and rights.
He wrote that Kanshi Ram raised political awareness among Bahujans and the poor, reminding them of the importance of their vote, voice and representation in a democratic system. According to Gandhi, his work strengthened the foundations of Indian democracy and made the political system more inclusive.
Demand raised at Lucknow event
The Congress leader also referred to a programme titled Samajik Parivartan Divas, held at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow, where a proposal was passed urging that Kanshi Ram be honoured with the Bharat Ratna.
However, the demand drew criticism from Mayawati, chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party, who questioned the Congress party’s historical record in recognising Dalit icons such as B. R. Ambedkar.
Gandhi concluded that awarding the Bharat Ratna to Kanshi Ram would recognise his immense contribution and honour the aspirations of millions who view him as a symbol of empowerment and hope.
