Rail projects worth Rs 1.28 lakh crore underway in Gujarat: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Gandhinagar: Gujarat has been allocated Rs 17,366 crore in this year’s Union Budget for railway development, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Sunday.

Speaking after the inauguration of Gujarat Semiconnect Conference-2026 at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, he said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, railway infrastructure across India is witnessing rapid transformation.

    Record budget allocation for Gujarat

Vaishnaw said that during the UPA government between 2009 and 2014, Gujarat received around Rs 589 crore annually for railway projects.

“In comparison, the present government has allocated Rs 17,366 crore for Gujarat this year, which is a record-breaking budget,” he said. He added that this sharp increase will help modernise the rail network and improve passenger facilities across the state.

He also stated that railway projects worth Rs 1.28 lakh crore are currently under execution in Gujarat.

87 stations under Amrit Station Scheme

Under the Amrit Station Scheme, 87 railway stations in Gujarat have been selected for redevelopment into world-class facilities, of which 21 have already been completed.

Work is progressing at key stations including Ahmedabad, Sabarmati, Surat, Una and Somnath. Vaishnaw said that after redevelopment, Ahmedabad railway station will offer international-level facilities to passengers.

    Bullet train to boost connectivity

Referring to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, the minister said the Centre is preparing to operationalise the bullet train next year.

Once completed, travel between Ahmedabad and Mumbai will take just one hour and 57 minutes at a speed of 350 km per hour, he said.

Vaishnaw added that senior officials from Japan’s Prime Minister’s Office recently reviewed the project and expressed satisfaction with the progress.

He also said that Prime Minister Modi has approved seven new high-speed rail routes to expand similar services to other cities in the future.
