Rain and Storm Warning for Punjab and Chandigarh: Alert Issued for 10 Districts Today; Relief from Heatwave

Punjab and Chandigarh have been experiencing a spell of rain for the past three days, bringing much-needed relief to residents from the heat. The Meteorological Department has forecast rain accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning in several parts of the state until June 4. A ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for 10 districts today.

Due to the rainfall, a drop of 4.8 degrees Celsius has been recorded in the temperature. It has now settled at 7.6 degrees below the normal average. However, weather experts suggest that weather fluctuations will persist until June 6, following which temperatures could rise again by 6 to 8 degrees over the subsequent week.

On the other hand, apprehensions regarding a weak monsoon for Punjab are fueling growing concerns. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state may receive lower-than-normal rainfall this year. Consequently, dependence on groundwater for irrigation during the paddy cultivation season is expected to rise, potentially pushing electricity demand to a record high of 18,000 megawatts.

Experts believe that the groundwater crisis could deepen further due to low rainfall and the prevailing El Niño conditions. To address this challenge, the government is actively promoting the Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) technique, which aims to conserve water, electricity, and labor resources.

Relief from Heatwave; Rain Forecast for 10 Districts

The monsoon is advancing gradually. Over the next 3–4 days, it is expected to reach Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, and additional parts of the Bay of Bengal. Meanwhile, an active Western Disturbance is hovering over the region surrounding Uttar Pradesh. Under its influence, skies are likely to remain overcast in several parts of North India. This effect is also expected to extend to Punjab, ensuring cooler weather and providing relief from the heatwave over the coming days.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in certain areas of the following districts today: Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Bathinda, and Mansa. Meanwhile, light to moderate rain may occur at some places in the surrounding areas, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, and Tarn Taran.
