Rain and Hailstorm in Amritsar: Standing Wheat Crop Damaged; Farmers worried

Unseasonal rains and hailstorms in Amritsar have severely impacted the standing, mature wheat crop. Consequently, farmers are facing significant hardships. They report that the wheat grains have turned black, and there has been a decline in overall yield. The shifting weather patterns have heightened the farmers’ anxiety.

Farmers have demanded compensation from the government. They argue that due to the constantly changing weather conditions, farming is becoming increasingly challenging day by day. Currently, farmers are hoping for better conditions and praying that the weather turns favorable in the days to come.

Rain Ruins Even the Remaining Crop

Iqbal Singh, a farmer and resident of Riad village, explained that they had previously endured the harsh impact of scorching heat and adverse weather. Subsequently, floods last year devastated everything. Now, sudden rains have ruined even the meager portion of the crop that had survived. He noted that the wheat grains have blackened, and there is no longer any hope for a harvest from the crop.

Crops on Leased Land Destroyed

Meanwhile, farmer Satnam Singh stated that the crops on the land he had taken on lease have been completely destroyed. Expressing his deep concern, he remarked that they were already reeling under the burden of inflation; now, with the crops ruined as well, their financial situation has deteriorated even further.

Yield Barely Reaching 5 to 7 Quintals Per Acre

According to the farmers, areas that typically yielded a bountiful harvest are now barely producing 5 to 7 quintals per acre. Under these circumstances, it has become difficult for farmers to even recover their cultivation costs. The farmers have urged the government to conduct an accurate assessment of their losses and provide adequate compensation to help them overcome this crisis.

Possibility of Rain and Strong Winds on Saturday

It is worth noting that several districts across Punjab witnessed rainfall on Friday. The skies remain overcast, and cold winds continue to blow. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of rain, strong winds, and hailstorms across the state on both Friday and Saturday.
