Rain to lash Himachal for a week; ‘Orange Alert’ issued for five districts

Himachal Pradesh is expected to witness continuous rainfall for a week. An ‘Orange Alert’ for heavy rain has been issued for five districts of the state for a two-day period. Over the past 24 hours, rainfall recorded in various locations includes: Kasauli (55.0 mm), Manali (51.0 mm), Bhatiyat (45.3 mm), Dharampur (42.4 mm), Sarahan (39.5 mm), Kotkhai (31.1 mm), Salooni (26.2 mm), Jubbarhatti (25.6 mm), Jot Chamba (21.2 mm), Bharmour (16.2 mm), and Bharwain (14.0 mm). Intermittent rain continues in several areas, including the capital, Shimla.

Retaining wall collapses hours after construction
Meanwhile, a retaining wall constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD) on Friday at the ‘Kuthlu’ site in Thalan—located on the Kalhel-Banjli-Raila road in the Churah subdivision—collapsed late at night. Reports indicate that traffic movement had been disrupted due to road damage at this location. The PWD had built the retaining wall to restore the road for bus traffic. Villagers are now demanding the construction of a permanent concrete retaining wall to ensure the road remains safe in the long run and to prevent commuting difficulties for the public.

Heavy rain alert for these districts
According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, the rainy spell is forecast to continue across the state until July 10. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in most parts of the state from July 6 to July 8. An ‘Orange Alert’ for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for five districts on July 6 and 7. Light rain is expected on Sunday. A ‘Yellow Alert’ for rain has been issued for certain areas in Solan, Sirmaur, Kangra, Mandi, and Shimla. Additionally, an ‘Orange Alert’ for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for the districts of Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur for July 6. An ‘Orange Alert’ will remain in effect for Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur on July 7 as well. Rainfall is expected to continue across the state until July 9.
