Rain lashes Ludhiana and Pathankot, strong winds in Jalandhar; Punjab faces a two-day alert for rain and storms

Weather conditions have shifted across Punjab and Chandigarh. Rain occurred in Ludhiana and Pathankot on Thursday, while strong winds are blowing in several areas, including Jalandhar. The Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for rain, storms, and thunderstorms in the state for today (June 25) and tomorrow.

Temperatures have risen by 0.7 degrees Celsius, nearing normal levels. The highest temperature, 41.6 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Bathinda. Meanwhile, electricity demand remains above 15,000 megawatts, even as three units at thermal power plants remain shut down. The monsoon is expected to arrive by the last week of June.

According to the Meteorological Centre, alerts for storms, thunderstorms, and lightning strikes have been issued for 12 districts in Punjab. These include Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, and Mohali.

Additionally, the possibility of rain has been forecast for 15 districts in the state. These include Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Barnala, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and Mohali.

33% Deficit in Rainfall Recorded

Over the past 24 hours, the highest rainfall in Punjab—30.5 mm—was recorded in Sri Anandpur Sahib (Rupnagar). Apart from this, 1 mm of rainfall was recorded in Pathankot, Thein Dam (Pathankot), and Mohali each, while Patiala recorded 0.6 mm. Only a trace amount of rain was recorded in Amritsar, while most other districts in the state saw no rainfall.

So far, the state has received 33 percent less rainfall compared to the normal average of 35.7 mm. In other words, Punjab has recorded below-normal rainfall this season. However, rainfall activity has increased in several districts over the past few days, leading to a change in the weather.
