The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the death of three sanitation workers in a septic tank tragedy in Raipur. The incident has once again highlighted the dangerous conditions faced by sanitation workers and the continued issue of manual scavenging in parts of the country.
The Commission has sought a detailed report from the local authorities, expressing concern over the loss of lives and possible negligence in ensuring worker safety.
According to reports, the three sanitation workers lost their lives while cleaning a septic tank, allegedly due to inhalation of toxic gases. Such incidents are often linked to lack of proper safety equipment and failure to follow standard operating procedures.
Despite strict laws banning hazardous manual cleaning of septic tanks, such practices continue to occur, particularly in smaller cities and towns.
The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Chhattisgarh government and concerned officials, directing them to submit a comprehensive report within a stipulated time frame. The report is expected to include details of the incident, action taken against those responsible, and compensation provided to the victims’ families.
The Commission has also asked whether safety protocols were followed and if protective gear was provided to the workers.
The Raipur tragedy is not an isolated case. Similar incidents have been reported across the country, raising serious questions about the enforcement of laws related to sanitation work and worker safety.
Activists have long argued that despite legal prohibitions, manual scavenging and unsafe septic tank cleaning continue due to lack of awareness, poor implementation of rules, and economic vulnerabilities of workers.
Following the incident, there have been calls for strict action against those responsible for sending workers into hazardous conditions without adequate safety measures. Experts emphasise the need for mechanised cleaning systems and strict monitoring to prevent such tragedies.
The NHRC’s intervention is expected to push authorities to ensure accountability and take corrective measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
The incident has once again brought attention to the need for ensuring the safety, dignity, and rights of sanitation workers. Authorities are being urged to implement existing laws effectively and provide alternative livelihood options to those engaged in hazardous work.
As the investigation progresses, the focus remains on delivering justice to the victims’ families and preventing further loss of life due to unsafe sanitation practices.
