Raja Muthupandi Wins Silver in 65kg Weightlifting as India’s Commonwealth Games Medal Tally Grows

Glasgow: Indian weightlifter Raja Muthupandi delivered a spirited performance to win the silver medal in the men’s 65kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026, adding another podium finish to India’s campaign in Glasgow. The medal further strengthened India’s tally and continued the country’s impressive showing in weightlifting.
Competing in his Commonwealth Games debut, Muthupandi lifted a combined total of 286kg, comprising 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk. Malaysia’s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin claimed the gold medal with a Games record total of 299kg, while Papua New Guinea’s Morea Baru secured bronze with 282kg.
Strong comeback earns India another medal
Muthupandi stayed in contention throughout the competition and produced a determined effort in the clean and jerk to finish second. Although he narrowly missed the gold medal, his silver marked an impressive achievement on his Commonwealth Games debut.
The result also ensured India won medals in all three weightlifting events contested during the day, underlining the country’s strength in the sport.
Weightlifting boosts India’s campaign
India enjoyed a productive day on the weightlifting platform with multiple podium finishes. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu clinched a historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, while Chanambam Rishikanta Singh secured silver in the men’s 60kg category. Muthupandi’s silver completed a memorable day for the Indian weightlifting contingent.
With the latest medal, India continued to climb the Commonwealth Games medal table as its athletes delivered strong performances across disciplines in Glasgow.
