Raja Warring Resigns as Punjab Congress Chief, Changes X Bio to Former PPCC President

Chandigarh: Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), bringing a change in the state Congress leadership ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

Warring has also changed his X profile bio to describe himself as “former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President”, further indicating his exit from the organisational post. Current reports say he submitted his resignation to Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal.

The development comes after weeks of reports about differences within the Punjab Congress and discussions over a change in the state party leadership.

Raja Warring Steps Down After Four Years as PPCC Chief

Warring took charge as Punjab Congress president in April 2022. He is also the Ludhiana Lok Sabha MP.

The leadership change comes less than a year before the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The Congress high command’s decision to change the state leadership has been linked in reports to an organisational review conducted after Sachin Pilot took charge as the party’s Punjab affairs in-charge.

Earlier on Thursday, when asked about reports of his resignation, Warring declined to comment in detail, saying that some matters were internal and that he would speak at the appropriate time.

Congress Yet to Announce New Punjab Chief

The Congress has not yet officially announced Warring’s successor.

Vijay Inder Singla, a former Punjab minister and Congress Working Committee member, is among the names being discussed for the post. Other names reported to be under consideration include Pargat Singh and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. The final decision rests with the Congress leadership.

Reports about Singla being a possible successor should therefore be treated as speculation until the party makes an official announcement.

Warring Led Punjab Congress During 2024 Lok Sabha Polls

Warring became Punjab Congress chief in April 2022 and led the party during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the state.

The Congress won seven of Punjab’s 13 Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 elections. Warring himself won the Ludhiana parliamentary seat.

With his resignation, the Congress is now set to appoint a new state president as the party prepares for the 2027 Assembly elections.
