After the publication of final electoral lists ahead of upcoming elections, several regions in India have recorded notable changes in their voter populations. Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands have reported an increase in the number of registered voters, while Goa has seen a decline compared with previous rolls, according to data from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The updated lists will be used for elections to state assemblies and other polls in the near future, representing the latest changes in voter demographics.
In Rajasthan, the final roll shows a significant rise in the number of electors, driven by young first-time voters and improved enrolment drives. Similarly, Chhattisgarh posted an uptick in voters, reflecting ongoing efforts to register eligible citizens ahead of the polls.
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands, a Union Territory with a relatively smaller population, also recorded an increase in voters, attributed to demographic shifts and a robust final verification process.
Election officials noted that the increases in these regions demonstrate successful voter awareness campaigns and proactive inclusion of eligible citizens before finalizing the lists.
In contrast, Goa experienced a drop in the number of registered voters in the final list compared with earlier drafts. Officials attributed the decline to removal of duplicate entries, death records being updated, and compliance with strict verification criteria under the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and related ECI guidelines.
Voter rights activists welcomed the clean-up exercise in Goa, saying it ensures more accurate and credible electoral rolls, even if it temporarily reduces the overall voter count.
The final voter rolls will form the basis for upcoming state assembly elections in several regions. The increase in registered electors in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh could influence electoral strategies, especially with a growing segment of younger voters.
Election authorities will continue to monitor electoral participation patterns as polling day approaches, focusing on facilitating smooth voting processes and high turnout.
The Election Commission of India conducts periodic revision of electoral rolls, including additions, deletions, and corrections, to maintain accurate and comprehensive lists. The final rolls reflect months of field verification, public objections, and administrative updates.
Officials urged voters to check their entries and verify details ahead of elections to ensure seamless voting on polling day.
