Rajasthan Water Crisis Deepens: 307 Dams Empty, Only Five at Full Capacity

The latest report of the Water Resources Department on the state dams has come out in Rajasthan amid the wait for the monsoon. According to this, 44.22 percent of the total capacity is left in the major, medium and small dams of the state.

It is a matter of relief that about 15 percent more water is stored in 2025 and 2026 than in the year 2024. However, this time the water is about 2 percent less than last year.

There is some relief this time in terms of Udaipur district and division. The water situation here is much stronger than last year. Due to the better water stock in the main dams of Mewar-Vagad at this time, a major water crisis in the city has been averted before the monsoon. The good thing for the local residents and tourists of Udaipur is that the water level of the main lakes here is still more than half.

Will there be no water crisis till the monsoon?

The main lakes of Udaipur city, Fatehsagar and Pichola, are still more than 65 per cent of the water safe. According to the calculations of the Water Resources Department, this water present in the lakes is sufficient to supply water to the entire city of Udaipur till the monsoon arrives and the lakes overflow again.

The Mansi Wakal dam, which supplies water to the city, also has more than 60 per cent stock. This means that even if there is a slight delay in the monsoon, the people of Udaipur city will not have to face water cuts or any major water crisis at the moment. It is also a matter of relief for tourists that even in this last week of June, the view of the lakes is not dry but full of water.

307 dams in Rajasthan are completely empty; water is drying up every day.

According to the latest report of the Water Resources Department, a total of 693 dams in Rajasthan are being monitored. Of these, 307 dams have completely dried up, that is, there is no water at all. At the same time, there are only 5 dams that are completely full. The remaining 381 dams have some water, which are considered to be partially full. In the last 24 hours, a total of 11.88 MCM of water has been reduced in the dams of the state due to no rain and intense heat.

The data of the report shows that the 23 largest and major dams of the state currently have 56.09 percent water. On the other hand, 263 medium dams have 26.27 per cent water left.

The most worrisome condition is that of 407 small dams, in which only 13.50 per cent of their total capacity is left. If we look at the different areas i.e. zone-wise, the dams of Kota zone have the highest water of 54.93 percent, while the dams of Jodhpur zone have the lowest water left at 18.68 percent.

Water Status in Lakes and Dams of Udaipur

Sabarmati Dam: The water condition in this reservoir is the best, it is 68.91 percent waterlogged.
Fatehsagar Lake: This lake, a favorite of tourists, currently has 68.35 percent water of its total capacity.
Pichola Lake: This historic lake of Udaipur still has 66.18 percent water stock safe.
Mansi Wakal Dam: The city’s major thirst-quenching dam currently has 60.34 per cent water available.
Udaysagar Lake: The water level in this lake is currently recorded at 57.14% of its total filling capacity.
Jaisamand Lake: This huge lake in the Udaipur-Salumbar region currently has a large stock of 54.58 percent water.
Vallabhnagar Dam: The water crisis in this dam is visible, now only 48.54 percent water is left.
Jakham Dam: The water level in this important dam of Pratapgarh-Udaipur area has come down to 44.46 percent.
Som Kagazhar Dam: The water level in this reservoir has gone down considerably. It has only 35.03 percent water.
Akodara Dam: The condition of this dam is very worrisome, only 7.60 percent water is left here.
Kharatana Dam: The water stock here is almost depleted, with only 3.07 per cent water left in it.
Bagolia Dam: The Peta of this dam is in a state of complete drying, now only 2.93 percent water is left.

Water situation in other districts of Udaipur division (zone)

Rajsamand: The water stock in the main lake of Rajsamand district is still better, with 57.28 per cent water present.
Chittorgarh: Only 15.16 per cent water is left in Gambhir dam and 9.97 per cent in Orai dam in Chittorgarh district. At the same time, Ghosunda Dam is 49.83 percent full.
Bhilwara: The Meja dam in Bhilwara has 33.97 per cent water available at present, while Kothari dam has a good stock of 68.81 per cent.
Salumbar: Kezad dam in the district recorded 22.99 per cent water level while Daya dam recorded 25.34 per cent.
Banswara-Dungarpur (Wagad): The Som Kamla Amba Dam in Dungarpur has a strong stock of 68.56 per cent, while the Mahi Bajaj Sagar Dam in Banswara has 43.76 per cent water left.
