Rajasthan, Haryana to Sign Yamuna Water Sharing Pact today in Amit Shah’s presence, Ending 30-Year Deadlock

New Delhi/Jaipur: Rajasthan and Haryana are set to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) on Monday to implement the 1994 Yamuna water-sharing agreement, bringing an end to a dispute that has remained unresolved for nearly three decades.

The agreement will be signed in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, along with Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

Agreement to Benefit Rajasthan’s Shekhawati Region

The Yamuna Water Project is expected to provide drinking water and irrigation to the districts of Sikar, Churu and Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan’s Shekhawati region.

Under the agreement, Rajasthan will receive 1,917 cusecs of Yamuna water, which will be transported from the Hathnikund Barrage to the Hashyawas reservoir in Churu through a hybrid pipeline system.

Special Purpose Vehicle to Execute Project

Instead of creating a joint management board, both states have agreed to establish a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to oversee the implementation, operation and maintenance of the project.

The Rajasthan government will fund the project, while efforts will also be made to secure financial assistance from the Central government.

Major Infrastructure Project Planned

The project includes laying three pipelines, each measuring 3.6 metres in diameter, from Hathnikund to Hashyawas. The pipeline will pass through five districts of Haryana before reaching Rajasthan.

Once approvals are completed, land acquisition will begin, followed by tendering and construction work.

Why the Agreement Matters

The pact marks a significant breakthrough in resolving a long-pending inter-state water-sharing issue. Besides improving irrigation and drinking water supply in Rajasthan, the pipeline network is expected to support future water distribution from the proposed Kishau, Lakhwar and Renukaji projects, strengthening long-term water security in the region.
