Rajasthan Safety Drive: Over 100 Luxury Sleeper Buses Seized for Illegal Modifications

Jaipur: A month-long statewide enforcement drive launched by the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority (RALSA) has led to the seizure of more than 100 luxury sleeper buses for allegedly violating mandatory transport safety norms.

The campaign, launched under the directions of RALSA Member Secretary Justice Hariom Atri and backed by the Rajasthan High Court, has prompted bus operators across the state to begin removing illegal modifications and restoring vehicles to approved safety standards.

    Judicial Officers Monitor Safety Inspections

The special drive is being carried out across 12 districts following concerns over a series of fatal sleeper bus accidents and fire incidents in Rajasthan.

Judicial officers have been monitoring surprise inspections in cities including Jaipur and Jodhpur, where authorities found several buses operating with serious safety violations. These included the absence of adequate emergency exits, illegally modified sleeper layouts, oversized luggage compartments created by reducing passenger space, excessive vehicle overhang and roof-mounted luggage carriers.

Officials said these modifications violated provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and AIS-119 (Rev. 1): 2016 safety standards for sleeper buses.

    Bus Operators Begin Rectification Work

Following the enforcement drive, thousands of bus operators have reportedly approached workshops to restore their vehicles to approved specifications.

According to officials, many buses had been modified to create additional luggage space, compromising passenger safety. Authorities expect nearly 80 per cent of the affected buses to be brought into compliance within the next month.

The inspections also uncovered registration irregularities. Officials seized a bus displaying a Rajasthan registration number that was allegedly registered in Madhya Pradesh, while two buses registered in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand were also seized for violating transport regulations.

Drive Launched After Deadly Bus Fires

The safety campaign follows a series of tragic bus fire incidents in Rajasthan.

On July 1, eight passengers lost their lives after a luxury sleeper bus caught fire in Dausa. In another major incident in November 2025, more than two dozen people were killed after a bus caught fire in Phalodi.

Authorities said the ongoing drive aims to improve passenger safety, enforce compliance with transport regulations and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
