Rajasthan Begins Statewide OBC Survey Ahead of Panchayat and Urban Body Elections

Jaipur: The Rajasthan OBC Commission will begin a statewide door-to-door survey of Other Backward Class (OBC) families on Friday to assess reservation requirements for the upcoming Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Body elections.

The survey will continue until July 23, after which the Commission will compile its findings and submit a report to the state government. The State Election Commission is expected to announce the election schedule only after receiving the report, as OBC reservation must be finalised before the polls.

Commission flags staff transfers as concern

Ahead of the survey, the OBC Commission urged the state government to ensure the smooth deployment of staff, warning that the ongoing transfer of government employees could affect the exercise.

In a letter to the Chief Secretary, the Commission said employees from various departments, including those assigned to survey work, are being transferred. It cautioned that if enumerators are relieved from their current postings, the survey could face disruptions and delay submission of the report.

Report expected by August

The Commission has been tasked with preparing recommendations on OBC reservation in line with Supreme Court directives. It is expected to submit its report by the second week of August.

Based on the report, the State Election Commission is likely to announce the election schedule by late August or September, with Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Body elections expected to be completed by November.

The development comes after the Rajasthan High Court directed the state government to conduct the local body elections by July 31. However, the government has maintained that the elections cannot be held until the OBC reservation process is completed through the Commission’s report.
