Rajnath Singh Confers Honorary Lt Colonel Rank on Olympian Neeraj Chopra

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday formally conferred the Honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army on star javelin thrower and two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra during a pipping ceremony held at South Block.

From Naib Subedar to Honorary Lieutenant Colonel

Neeraj, who was enrolled in the Indian Army as a Junior Commissioned Officer (Naib Subedar) on August 26, 2016, serves with The Rajputana Rifles. His elevation marks yet another proud milestone in a career that has blended sporting excellence with national service.

The javelin ace created history by becoming India’s first Olympic gold medallist in track and field at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, followed by gold at the World Athletics Championships 2023 and silver at the Paris Olympics 2024.

‘An Epitome of Perseverance and Patriotism’

Interacting with Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra and his family, Rajnath Singh hailed him as “an epitome of perseverance, patriotism and the Indian spirit of striving for excellence.”

“Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra embodies the highest ideals of discipline, dedication and national pride, serving as an inspiration to generations within the sporting fraternity and the Armed Forces alike,” the minister said.

Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi and senior Army and Territorial Army officers attended the ceremony.

A Decorated Career of Excellence

Neeraj’s sporting achievements include multiple gold medals at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and Diamond League events. His personal best throw of 90.23 metres (2025) stands as a benchmark in Indian athletics.

President Droupadi Murmu granted him the Honorary commission on April 16, 2025, in recognition of his exceptional achievements and service to the nation.

He has previously been honoured with the Padma Shri, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, Param Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
