Rajpal Yadav Walks Out of Tihar Jail After Interim Bail Order

New Delhi, Feb 17 — Veteran Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav walked out of Tihar Jail on Tuesday after spending 13 days in custody in a long-running cheque bounce case, following an interim bail order from the Delhi High Court. The relief comes amid a legal dispute over unpaid dues that have reportedly swelled to nearly ₹9 crore.

Yadav had surrendered at Tihar earlier this month after the High Court refused to extend the deadline for repayment in multiple cheque bounce cases and ordered him to serve his sentence.

High Court Grants Interim Bail Until March 18

The Delhi High Court granted the actor interim bail on Monday, suspending his sentence until March 18, subject to certain conditions including a deposit of ₹1.5 crore, furnishing a personal bond of ₹1 lakh and providing a surety of the same amount. The decision allows him to remain free until the next hearing in the case.

The court’s order came after Yadav’s counsel informed the bench that the required amount had been deposited into the complainant’s account. The actor is also directed to be present either physically or via video conferencing for future hearings.

Background of the Cheque Bounce Case

The case stems from a 2010 loan taken by Yadav to finance his directorial venture, which failed commercially, leading to a ₹5 crore debt that ballooned to nearly ₹9 crore with interest and penalties over the years. Multiple cheques issued as part of the repayment were dishonoured, resulting in legal proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

In 2018, a magistrate court convicted Yadav and his wife in the case, sentencing him to six months’ imprisonment. The conviction was upheld by a sessions court, and the matter was later appealed in the High Court.

    Journey From Surrender to Release

Despite earlier relief granted in 2024, Yadav failed to comply with court conditions to repay the outstanding amount, prompting the High Court to direct his surrender in early February. He complied and was taken into custody at Tihar Jail on February 5.

During his time in prison, the actor received support from peers in the film industry, and his legal team continued efforts to seek relief from the court. The interim bail granted this week marks a significant development in the protracted case.

    Next Legal Steps

Yadav’s interim bail extends until the next scheduled hearing on March 18, by which the court will re-examine the matter. The actor must adhere to all bail conditions while proceedings continue.

This episode highlights both the legal consequences of bounced cheques under Indian law and the complexities involved in long-standing financial disputes, even for well-known public figures.
