August 3, 2026
New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm on Monday following a heated protest by Opposition members during Zero Hour. The disruption came after MPs demanded the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the House, forcing Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan to temporarily suspend proceedings.
Opposition MPs raise slogans during Zero Hour
As the Chairman began calling names of members to raise matters during Zero Hour, Opposition MPs insisted on taking up their issues under Rule 267.
The Chairman declined the request, reminding members that the Chair had repeatedly ruled against allowing such notices.
Despite this, Opposition members displayed placards and raised slogans, including “Grih Mantri Sadan Mein Aao” (Home Minister must come to the House), demanding Amit Shah’s presence.
Chairman warns protesting members
Amid the continued uproar, Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan warned MPs against displaying placards, calling it an act of indiscipline.
He said he would not allow any member, including the Leader of Opposition, to speak until order was restored.
“Unless you stop displaying placards and stop sloganeering, I will not call even the Leader of Opposition. Go back to your seats. If you do so, I will call him,” the Chairman said.
As the protest continued, the House was adjourned until 2 pm.
Regular business conducted before disruption
Earlier, the Rajya Sabha completed routine parliamentary business, including laying of papers related to different ministries.
Dr L. Murugan presented papers on behalf of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, while Tokhan Sahu, Raj Bhushan Choudhary and Murlidhar Mohol laid papers related to the Ministries of Housing and Urban Affairs, Jal Shakti and Civil Aviation respectively.
The House also took up statements by ministers on the implementation of parliamentary committee recommendations and other department-related matters.
However, the Opposition protest during Zero Hour brought proceedings to a halt, with the remaining agenda now depending on whether normal functioning resumes when the House meets again.
