New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm on Monday as Opposition members continued their protest over the alleged NEET paper leak and police action against students during demonstrations, leading to further disruption of proceedings during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The Upper House had earlier been adjourned till noon. When proceedings resumed after the break, Opposition members again raised slogans and demanded a discussion on the issues related to examination irregularities and the handling of student protests.
Opposition demands discussion on NEET protests
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari raised the NEET paper leak issue after the House reconvened and said that under Article 75 of the Constitution, the Council of Ministers was collectively responsible to the people.
He argued that Parliament was the appropriate forum for the government to explain the developments and respond to concerns raised by students and opposition parties.
Tiwari alleged that students, including female protesters, were subjected to police action during demonstrations and demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah address the House on the matter.
Chair urges members to allow Question Hour
Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan appealed to members to allow Question Hour to continue and maintain the functioning of the House.
However, DMK member Tiruchi Siva raised a notice under Rule 267, seeking a discussion on banning the NEET examination. He said that although there were precedents against accepting such notices for extended periods, the current situation required special consideration.
Siva also highlighted concerns over student suicides linked to examination-related issues, saying that while the government could take several measures, it could not bring back lives lost.
No major business conducted amid repeated disruptions
The Chairman later allowed CPI(M) member John Brittas to raise a relevant point. Brittas said that the country, often described as the “mother of democracy”, had witnessed its capital facing the consequences of unrest involving students.
As disruptions continued and members raised multiple issues, the Chairman adjourned the House till 2 pm, citing continued disorder.
The latest adjournment marks another day of disruptions during the Monsoon Session, with the Rajya Sabha yet to conduct substantial legislative business due to repeated Opposition protests over the NEET controversy and related student demonstrations.
