Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney has urged the government to confer the Bharat Ratna posthumously on Bhagat Puran Singh, founder of Pingalwara. Urging Home Minister Amit Shah, Sahney sought the Bharat Ratna in recognition of his lifelong service to the poor, disabled and underprivileged.
In a letter dated August 10 addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Sahney highlighted Bhagat Puran Singh’s contributions as an environmentalist, philanthropist and social worker.
Bhagat Puran Singh founded Pingalwara Home for the sick and disabled in 1947. According to the letter, he dedicated his life to caring for people who had no permanent homes and worked extensively for the welfare of the poor, disabled and differently abled.
Sahney also noted his contribution to environmental conservation through tree plantation drives and writings on environmental issues.
Bhagat Puran Singh was awarded the Padma Shri in 1981, but returned the honour following the Indian Army’s action during Operation Blue Star.
Calling the conferment of the Bharat Ratna a fitting tribute, Sahney said Bhagat Puran Singh’s legacy of compassion and service deserved national recognition.
