Rampur: Azam Khan convicted for controversial remarks against DM; sentenced to 2 years in prison, ₹20,000 fine

A Rampur court has sentenced SP leader Azam Khan to two years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 in a case involving derogatory remarks made against the then District Magistrate. This case was registered within the jurisdiction of the Bhot police station during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

It was alleged that, during the election campaign, the SP leader had made objectionable comments regarding the then District Magistrate. Following the registration of the case and a subsequent investigation, the police filed a chargesheet in court. The trial in the matter had been ongoing in the court ever since.

On Saturday, following the conclusion of the hearings, the court convicted Azam Khan and sentenced him to two years of imprisonment along with a fine of ₹20,000.

Arguments Begin on Appeal to Enhance Sentences of Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam

Meanwhile, arguments commenced on Friday on behalf of the defense regarding an appeal filed to seek an enhancement of the sentences handed down to SP leader Azam Khan and his son, Abdullah Azam, in the ‘two PAN cards’ case.

The court has scheduled the next hearing in this matter for May 18. In the case involving SP leader Abdullah Azam’s two PAN cards, a Magistrate Court had recently sentenced both Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam to seven years of imprisonment each, along with a fine of ₹50,000 each.

In this particular case, appeals have been filed in the MP-MLA Sessions Court by the defense challenging the sentence, and by the prosecution seeking an enhancement of the sentence.

During the hearing held in the MP-MLA Sessions Court, Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC) Seema Rana informed the court that the defense had commenced its arguments regarding the appeal for sentence enhancement. Their arguments have not yet concluded. The court has scheduled the next hearing for May 18.
