Ray of Hope in West Asia

The fierce conflict that has raged in Western Asia for the past six weeks now appears to be drawing to a close. Following a 15-day ceasefire between Iran and the United States, representatives from Israel and Lebanon were summoned to Washington, where a 10-day ceasefire was subsequently declared between those two nations as well. Iran had previously been advocating for Lebanon to be included within the scope of any ceasefire agreement.

Indeed, this specific issue was the primary reason why the initial peace talks between the U.S. and Iran—held in Pakistan—had ended inconclusively. With this demand now having been accepted—either directly or indirectly—Iran has fully reopened the Strait of Hormuz. Iran further announced that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open to all commercial shipping traffic. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi also declared that security would be provided to passing vessels to ensure that no threats or hazards arise. In response to this move by Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump posted a message on social media simply stating, “Thank you.”

Amidst this atmosphere of relief, the international market witnessed a sharp decline in crude oil prices, which dropped to a level of $88.27 per barrel. It is worth noting, however, that neither did Trump fail to clarify that while he appreciated Iran’s decision to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the economic sanctions imposed upon the country would remain in force; nor did Netanyahu hesitate to state that while the ceasefire applied to Lebanon, it did not extend to the Hezbollah terrorists operating from within Lebanese territory. For the sake of its own security, Israel remains intent on rooting out Hezbollah in the same manner in which it previously cleared Hamas from the Gaza Strip.

Nevertheless, Trump issued a statement declaring that Israel would not be permitted to carry out bombing operations against Lebanon. In any event, the current climate appears increasingly conducive to the establishment of peace. The impact of the ceasefire established between Israel and Lebanon is also expected to be evident during the next round of potential peace talks between Iran and the United States. For his part, Trump has been repeatedly issuing statements asserting that a deal with Iran will be reached, the war will end, and peace will be established. The Gulf War has caused immense devastation.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced, and thousands have lost their lives. While the Gulf nations have certainly suffered damage, the heaviest toll has been borne by Iran and Israel. Amidst these efforts to restore peace, the United States is covertly seeking to leverage its economic might—specifically the weapon of sanctions—to cripple Iran economically to such an extent that it is left with no alternative but to agree to a settlement. Nevertheless, Iran has confronted the United States and Israel with the courage and solidarity of a true warrior. Although Iran continues to vow that it will deliver a crushing response to any attacks, the reality is that it no longer possesses the same capacity to wage war that it once did. Trump, too—driven by his own political and economic imperatives—seeks to exit the conflict as a victor, donning the mask of triumph.

Regarding the potential agreement currently being discussed for the upcoming peace talks, there is a possibility that the United States may agree to provide substantial financial aid to compensate for the damage inflicted upon Iran during the war; furthermore, the Strait of Hormuz could be permanently reopened, and the oversight of Iran’s uranium program could be entrusted to a neutral nuclear inspection agency. Given the extent of the damage already sustained by Iran, Israel, the United States itself, and the affected Gulf nations, it appears likely that these beleaguered nations may now approach the negotiating table with an open mind, thereby making a lasting settlement possible.
