Red Alert for Heatwave in 60 UP Districts Today: Heat Breaks 18-Year Record in Kanpur; Rain Expected from Tomorrow

Uttar Pradesh has been experiencing scorching heat for the past 10 days. The mercury has crossed the 45-degree mark. Over the last 24 hours, Prayagraj emerged as the hottest district in the country, recording a temperature of 45.2°C. Additionally, temperatures in Kashi, Hamirpur, and Agra also soared past 44 degrees.

According to the Meteorological Department, a “Red Alert” for a heatwave has been issued for 60 districts today, Saturday. The department has advised people to avoid venturing out in the sun between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Daytime temperatures could reach as high as 45–46°C. A “Warm Night” alert has been issued for 21 districts, indicating that the nights, too, will remain hot.

The Meteorological Department states that a change in weather patterns is expected starting tomorrow, Sunday. From April 26 to April 30, several parts of the state may experience light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to drop by 2 to 3 degrees.

In Kanpur, the heat has shattered an 18-year-old record. On Friday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 41.7°C. Prior to this, the temperature had reached 41.6°C in April 2008. In Agra, the Municipal Corporation is spraying water on the roads to provide relief to commuters and pedestrians.

The heat is also taking a toll on animals. At the Gorakhpur Zoo, a hippopotamus has refused to step out of the water. Meanwhile, at the Kanpur Zoo, a tiger is being administered an ORS solution to combat dehydration.
