Ahead of the Delhi Budget Session 2026, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday performed a traditional ‘kheer ceremony’, symbolising the formal commencement of the budget process and invoking prosperity for the national capital.

Traditional ceremony before Budget session

The ceremony, held a day before the presentation of the Delhi Budget, is a customary ritual observed in several parts of India to mark auspicious beginnings. During the event, the Chief Minister prepared and served kheer a traditional Indian dessert to students and attendees, highlighting cultural values and community participation.

Ministers and senior government officials were also present on the occasion, reflecting collective participation in the lead-up to the crucial budget session.

Tribute on Shaheed Diwas

The ceremony coincided with Shaheed Diwas, during which the Chief Minister paid tributes to freedom fighters including Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar.

As part of the commemorative events, a statue of Bhagat Singh was unveiled and a historic courtroom associated with his trial was restored and inaugurated. The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of remembering the sacrifices of young revolutionaries who laid down their lives for India’s independence.

Message of development and inclusivity

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the upcoming budget will focus on development, improved civic amenities, and enhancing the quality of life for Delhi residents. She stressed that the government is committed to fulfilling long-pending aspirations and providing a roadmap for a more sustainable and livable city.

Key areas expected to be highlighted in the budget include infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and environmental improvements. The government is also likely to introduce measures aimed at ensuring cleaner air and better urban facilities.

Budget to impact millions

The Chief Minister noted that the budget will cater to the needs of over three crore residents of Delhi, with a focus on inclusive growth and long-term development. She is set to present her second consecutive Delhi Budget, reinforcing continuity in governance and policy direction.

The ‘kheer ceremony’ also symbolises positivity and collective hope as the government prepares to unveil its financial roadmap for the coming year.
