New Delhi: A report has alleged that Western media outlets have historically underreported alleged state violence and human rights abuses by Pakistani authorities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), as well as in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while focusing on broader geopolitical narratives.

The report argues that Pakistan has often been portrayed primarily as a nuclear-armed neighbour of India rather than being scrutinised for its internal security policies and alleged human rights violations.

Report Raises Concerns Over Global Media Coverage

According to the report, incidents in Rawalakot, Mirpur and Kotli in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir have received limited international attention despite allegations of violence against civilians.

It also claims that demonstrators in PoK have received little international support and alleges that paramilitary personnel removed bodies from hospitals following the violence in an attempt to conceal casualties. These allegations have not been independently verified.

The report further states that Western media coverage of the developments has been limited compared to coverage of other regional issues.

Criticism of International Response

The report contends that Pakistan’s strategic importance to several Western countries has influenced both media attention and foreign policy responses to alleged internal repression.

It alleges that incidents involving the suppression of dissent in PoK, Balochistan, Waziristan and other regions have often received limited attention from sections of the international media and policy community.

According to the report, Pakistan’s geopolitical significance has contributed to what it describes as a pattern of muted international scrutiny of its domestic policies.
