What Are Republic Day Tableaux?

Republic Day tableaux are decorated floats that form a key part of the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. They showcase India’s cultural diversity, heritage, developmental achievements and thematic messages through creative artwork, music, performances, and design.

In the 77th Republic Day Parade 2026, about 30 tableaux including contributions from States, Union Territories, ministries, departments and services will roll down Kartavya Path under national themes like Vande Mataram and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Eligibility to Participate

Tableaux proposals are invited by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) from:

• State Governments

• Union Territory administrations

• Central government ministries and departments

Each participating entity must submit a complete proposal that includes a sketch/design, written concept note, and audio-visual material within the stipulated deadline on the Rashtraparv Portal.

Setting the Themes

Every year, the MoD finalises overarching themes in consultation with other central authorities. These themes shape the creative direction of tableau proposals. For example, the 2026 parade focuses on Svatantrata ka Mantra – Vande Mataram and Samriddhi ka Mantra – Aatmanirbhar Bharat, highlighting freedom, self-reliance, development and India’s rich cultural tapestry.

How Designs Are Evaluated

An Expert Committee appointed by the MoD evaluates proposals in several rounds. The process typically involves:

1. Initial Review of Sketches: Committee checks concept clarity, relevance to theme and visual appeal.

2. Feedback and Revision: Participants may revise designs based on expert feedback.

3. 3D Model Assessment: Shortlisted applicants submit three-dimensional models for detailed assessment.

4. Final Selection: Based on creativity, aesthetics, impact, narration, use of local art and clarity for the audience.

This multi-stage evaluation ensures that only the most impactful and well-designed tableaux are chosen for the parade.

Design and Presentation Guidelines

The MoD provides each selected participant with a tractor and trailer base on which the tableau must be built. The design must be:

• Visually clear and simple enough to convey the theme without excessive text

• Fit within specified size limits

• Free of logos (except names of states/UTs/departments in languages on the sides)

• Inclusive of traditional music and performances where appropriate

These guidelines help maintain uniformity, creative quality and safety during the parade.

Post-Selection and Rehearsals

Once selected, teams report to the Republic Day Camp in Delhi in late December. They stay in the city through January to fabricate, refine and rehearse the tableau to ensure everything from choreography to mechanical movement aligns with the final approved design.
