RG Kar convict Sanjoy Roy’s sister, brother-in-law booked for ‘murder’ of his minor niece

Kolkata: In a tragic and mysterious development, a murder case has been registered in connection with the death of the 11-year-old niece of Sanjay Roy, the convict in the R.G. Kar case.

The case has been filed against Roy’s sister and brother-in-law, police officials confirmed on Thursday.

    Grandmother Files Complaint Against Parents

According to police sources, the deceased minor’s grandmother, Pratima Singh, a resident of Vidyasagar Colony in South Kolkata’s Alipore area, lodged a complaint at the Alipore Police Station. Unable to accept her granddaughter’s untimely death, Pratima accused her son Bhola Singh and daughter-in-law Pooja Singh of murder.

Apart from the grandmother, several residents of Vidyasagar Colony on D.L. Khan Road also submitted a written complaint against Bhola and Pooja, alleging their involvement in the minor’s death.

A senior police official stated, “Since the complaint is of murder, a case under the relevant sections has been registered. The investigation is being carried out with utmost seriousness, and all possible angles are being examined.”

    Incident and Background

The 11-year-old girl was found hanging inside a cupboard in her Alipore residence on October 19. She was immediately rushed to SSKM Hospital, where she succumbed the following day.

At the time of the incident, no one was reportedly at home. Police later learned that the deceased’s biological mother — Sanjay Roy’s sister — had died by suicide a few years earlier. Following her death, the father, Bhola Singh, married Pooja, his current wife.

On the evening of the incident, Pooja had allegedly gone out to buy firecrackers, according to her statement. However, neighbours informed the police that domestic quarrels were frequent in the household.

    Post-Mortem and Allegations of Abuse

Preliminary post-mortem findings indicated that the girl died by suicide, with evidence including ligature marks on her neck. However, locals and family members have alleged foul play.

The grandmother claimed that her granddaughter often complained of physical abuse by her father and stepmother. She alleged that Pooja frequently thrashed the child, and that Bhola had beaten her with a belt just before Kali Puja and Diwali.

Believing that the child’s death was the result of ongoing torture, Pratima Singh and neighbours filed the murder complaint.

As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
