Chennai: Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Devajit Saikia expressed condolences to left-handed batter Rinku Singh and his family after the cricketer’s father, Khanchand Singh, passed away following a prolonged battle with liver cancer.
Rinku Rushes to Delhi
Rinku, who is part of India’s T20 World Cup squad, left Chennai at 5:00 AM to rush to New Delhi. He is now believed to be on his way to his hometown Aligarh to attend the last rites of his father.
Saikia confirmed that Rinku will not travel with the Indian team to Kolkata for their next Super Eights fixture against the West Indies, scheduled for Sunday.
“I would express my deepest condolences on behalf of BCCI to Rinku Singh and his whole family at this hour of crisis. He left for Delhi from Chennai at 5 AM to rush to the hospital in Greater Noida, where his father was undergoing treatment.
So, he will not be travelling with the Indian team to Kolkata in the flight scheduled for this afternoon. Once we get any updated information on Rinku, we’ll let you know,” Saikia told IANS.
Undergoing Treatment in Greater Noida
Khanchand Singh had been admitted to Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida on February 21 after his health deteriorated. He was placed on ventilator support before passing away in the early hours of Friday.
Rinku had earlier stayed with his father during his illness but rejoined the squad ahead of India’s match against Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday. However, he did not feature in the playing XI, as Sanju Samson was chosen to open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma.
Crucial Match Ahead for India
Defending champions India are set to face the West Indies in a virtual knockout clash on Sunday, with a semi-final berth at stake. The winner will join South Africa in the semi-finals from Group 1.
Rinku Singh father Suffered from Cancer
Indian cricketer Rinku Singh suffered a personal loss as his father, Khanchand Singh, passed away at around 4:36 a.m. on Friday. He had been battling fourth-stage liver cancer and was admitted to a private hospital in Greater Noida after his condition worsened a few days ago.
Doctors placed him on ventilator support, but his health continued to deteriorate.
Rinku Singh Left Team India Camp Mid-Tournament
At the time of receiving news about his father’s deteriorating health, Rinku was in Chennai with Team India during the T20 World Cup. He immediately left the squad on Tuesday to return home and be with his family.
His sudden departure meant he missed the team’s practice session during the tournament.
Rejoined Squad But Missed Playing XI Spot
After performing the last rites and supporting his family, Rinku Singh returned to Chennai on February 25 and rejoined the Indian squad. However, he was not included in the playing XI for the Super 8 match against Zimbabwe on February 26 in Chennai.
He participated in the match as a substitute fielder.
