Road Accidents Behind Highest Rate of Sudden Deaths

The latest NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) report has just released that while some deaths in natural disasters like cyclones, floods, lightning strikes, etc. are beyond human control, others are preventable. However, the most noteworthy and shocking information in this report is that the biggest cause of sudden deaths in the country is speeding. The highest number of fatalities from such driving are from Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. It should be noted that during the tenure of India’s Road Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari, the country has undergone a road revolution. Wider roads have been built, and faster routes have been created away from the congested cities, allowing people to reach their destinations while driving at full speed.

But this rash driving has turned into reckless speeding due to open roads. This has led to a staggering increase in deaths in road accidents. NCRB report shows that on an average 546 people die in road accidents in the country every day. The number of these deaths is increasing every year. Statistics show that 1.99 lakh people died in road accidents in 2024. A year before this, in 2023, 1.98 lakh people died. This means that 0.89 percent more people died in a year. The report also includes rail accidents, accidents at railway crossings or in railway premises.

The report states that such deaths not only traumatize the families of the victims but also reduce India’s GDP by disrupting smooth traffic. The report calculated that the socio-economic cost of such incidents is approximately 3.14%. Three states top the list for such deaths: Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, accounting for 13.6%, 10.2%, and 9.8% of total deaths, respectively. Road accidents account for one-third of accidental deaths. This issue deserves serious consideration, as open and express roads were built for public convenience, safety, and to increase vehicle speed. However, people have neglected to take precautions on the roads, driving their vehicles recklessly, and thus becoming victims of accidents. The transportation revolution will be truly meaningful only when these shortcomings are addressed.
