Roadways Driver Killed in Kurali: Employees stage protest; seek financial help for family

The murder of Jalandhar Roadways depot driver Jagjit Singh in Kurali by hitting him with a rod has angered the temporary workers’ union. Consequently, the drivers and conductors of the Jalandhar Roadways depot have stopped the buses and parked them inside the depot.

Chanan Singh, a senior member of the temporary workers’ union working for Punjab Roadways, said that if the government does not announce a government job and a financial assistance of ₹1 crore (10 million rupees) for Jagjit Singh’s family, the buses at all 27 depots across Punjab will be stopped after 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Roadways bus service suspended since Wednesday evening
The temporary (Contractual) workers at the Jalandhar Roadways depot began a protest by parking their buses inside the depot around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Chanan Singh of the Roadways Employees’ Union stated that the government has not assured any compensation for the deceased driver.

Furthermore, the insurance scheme for temporary workers has also been discontinued. Employee Jagjit Singh was married and had two children. How will his family survive in such a situation?

If justice is not served, we will protest by placing the dead body on the road.
Leaders of the Punjab Roadways Jalandhar Depot Driver-Conductor Union stated that the postmortem of driver Jagjit will be conducted today at the government hospital in Mohali. His last rites are scheduled for today. However, if the government does not provide the family with financial assistance and a job, they will protest against the government by placing the dead body on the road.
