Sanitation System Crippled in Rohtak Amid Sweepers’ Strike; Garbage Piles Up Across City

Rohtak: The strike by sanitation workers in Rohtak continued for the 10th consecutive day. The employees staged protests by dumping garbage trolleys at various locations across the city. As a result of the employees’ strike, the entire city’s sanitation system has collapsed. Meanwhile, the administration has failed to offer any resolution to the situation.

The sanitation workers initiated their strike on May 1st to press for their demands. These demands include the provision of a risk allowance of ₹5,000, reimbursement for petrol and mobile phone expenses, the regularization of contractual employees, and financial assistanc along with a government job for the families of fire brigade personnel who have met with accidents.

Although the sanitation workers’ strike has now lasted for 10 days, their grievances remain unresolved. Consequently, the employees are expressing their protest by dumping garbage at various sites sometimes at the gates of the Municipal Corporation, sometimes in front of police stations, and at other times near the residences of political leaders. This has led to the accumulation of massive piles of filth throughout the city.

The Municipal Corporation has established designated dumping points at several locations across the city, where heaps of garbage have now piled up. Residents are facing significant inconvenience as garbage has gone uncollected for the past 10 days. Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation administration has, thus far, proven unable to resolve this crisis.

Garbage collection vehicles fail to reach households

The Municipal Corporation has deployed vehicles to collect garbage from every household, a service that has been outsourced to a private company. However, for the past several days, these garbage collection vehicles have failed to show up; as a result, residents have been compelled to dump their household waste onto the streets.

The agitation will continue until the demands are met

“We are on strike for the last 10 days on our demands but the officials and the government are completely indifferent,” said Shambhu Tank, President of the Municipal Employees’ Union. Their agitation will continue until all the employees’ demands are fully met.
