    RSP leader Balendra Shah to take oath as Nepal’s PM on Ram Navami
    Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, the former mayor of Kathmandu and a senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), is set to be sworn in as Nepal’s next Prime Minister on March 27, 2026.
    The RSP, a four-year-old party, secured a historic landslide victory in the snap parliamentary elections held on March 5, 2026, emerging as the largest force in the 275-member House of Representatives with 182 seats (125 first-past-the-post and 57 proportional representation).
    This near two-thirds majority followed widespread youth-led (Gen Z) protests in late 2025 that toppled the previous government amid allegations of corruption and poor governance.
    Shah, a 35-year-old former rapper, structural engineer, and hip-hop artist turned politician, was projected as the RSP’s prime ministerial candidate during the campaign. He notably defeated veteran leader and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in the Jhapa-5 constituency by a massive margin, symbolizing the rejection of traditional political elites.
    A key seven-point agreement reached on December 28, 2025, between RSP chairperson Rabi Lamichhane and Shah outlined that Lamichhane would continue leading the party, while Shah would head the government if the RSP won the mandate. With the party’s overwhelming victory, this plan is now being implemented.
    The swearing-in follows a structured timeline:

    • Newly elected lawmakers will take their oath of office at 2 pm on March 26, 2026, as scheduled by the Parliament Secretariat.
    • Immediately afterward, the RSP will elect Shah as its parliamentary party leader.
    • Shah will then stake his claim to form the government under Article 76(1) of Nepal’s Constitution.
    • President Ramchandra Paudel, who received the final election report on March 19, has indicated readiness to appoint the claimant without delay.
