Sacrilege case update: SIT issues notice to SAD Chief Sukhbir Badal; to be questioned on 20th July

Chandigarh: In a major update on the Behbal Kalan Sacrilege Case, the SIT issued a notice to SAD Chief Sukhbir Badal. Sukhbir Badal has been summoned on Monday and will be questioned by the SIT. It should be noted that Sukhbir Badal is being summoned following a statement by BJP leader Vijay Sampla.

Vijay Sampla appeared before the SIT

Let us tell you that BJP leader Vijay Sampla also appeared before the Investigating team. Sampla was summoned multiple times (reportedly the fourth summons) primarily regarding a memorandum he and others (from SAD-BJP) submitted to the then Punjab Governor on January 12, 2018.

The memo alleged a “deep-rooted conspiracy” behind the sacrilege incidents. This was referenced in earlier inquiries like the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission. Sampla denied having signed the representation submitted to the Governor alongside Sukhbir Badal regarding the sacrilege case

Discussions were held with former Akali MLA Mantar Brar by the CM, Home Minister, and DGP prior to the action taken against the protesters

The OSD to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal also confirmed that the order to remove the protesting individuals was issued at night

Firing took place on October 14, 2015, during protests against sacrilege

It is noteworthy that on October 14, 2015, police opened fire on people protesting against incidents of sacrilege at Behbal Kalan, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several others. This matter has long been a subject of discussion in Punjab’s political and religious circles; the SIT has filed chargesheets against police officers, the case is currently being heard in the Chandigarh District Court and the SIT’s investigation remains ongoing.
