Chandigarh: The Sadak Surakhya Force (SSF), formed under the initiative of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is proving to be a true “shield of life” in reducing road accidents across the state. Launched in January 2024, the force has already saved more than 45,000 lives. SSF teams are deployed every 30 km across nearly 4,100 km of road network.
Equipped with a modern fleet of 144 vehicles, including Toyota Hilux and Mahindra Scorpio, these teams reach accident sites within 5 to 7 minutes, providing immediate first aid and ensuring timely transportation of victims to hospitals.
Around 28% of the personnel in the force are women, who are actively contributing not only to road safety but also in preventing drug trafficking, vehicle theft, and even suicide attempts. The SSF has successfully stopped 12 suicide attempts so far. Their role has been especially commendable in ensuring the safety of women, school children, and night-time travelers. On the technology front, the force is equipped with speed guns, body cameras, e-challan systems, and AI-based tools, making policing smarter, more transparent, and more accountable.
The SSF has also played a significant role in relief operations during floods and other emergencies. Recently, Chief Minister Mann announced a massive allocation of ₹4,150.42 crore for upgrading 19,491 km of rural roads, along with ₹91.83 crore for a dedicated road safety project. The project will include zebra crossings, signage, and proper road markings. This initiative is set to boost both rural development and traffic safety across Punjab.
