Veteran Bollywood screenwriter Salim Khan known for penning classics such as Sholay and Deewar once openly criticized the trend of issuing fatwas against filmmakers and actors. In an older interview highlighted recently, he questioned why such religious edicts were directed only at people associated with films rather than everyone connected to cinema, including audiences.
Salim Khan, speaking in the interview on Lehrein TV, asked: “Why is a fatwa issued only against those who make films or act in them? Why not issue it against those who watch films as well?” He argued that if the criticism is about moral conduct or religious standards, then singling out only the industry’s creators and performers didn’t make logical sense.
He further observed that film producers often plan releases strategically especially around festivals like Eid given that such timings result in strong box office openings. Salim emphasised that films don’t succeed without audiences, noting: “If people stop watching our films, our work will automatically shut down.” That, he said, would make any targeted fatwa unnecessary if the real concern were public morality.
At present, Salim Khan is hospitalised and receiving treatment in an intensive care unit after complaining of breathing issues, though no specific relation between the interview and his health was indicated.
