SC orders status quo in Sambhal mosque row, issues notice

Sambhal: The Supreme Court on Friday ordered status quo till August 25 in the Sambhal mosque dispute and issued notice to Hindu petitioners.

The bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and A.S. Chandurkar passed the order. The apex court was hearing an appeal filed by a mosque committee challenging the Allahabad High Court order which had upheld the order of the Sambhal court for conducting a survey in the Shahi Jama Masjid and Harihar Mandir dispute and upheld the order of the court commissioner appointed for the survey as directed by the civil court.

The high court had said that the order of appointing a court commissioner and the petition (civil case) filed are justified.

The mosque committee had argued before the high court that the survey of the mosque was conducted as per the direction of the civil judge’s order dated November 19 last year and the second survey conducted on November 24 last year was illegal as the civil court had never ordered it.
