Sandeep Pathak Approaches High Court, Hearing Today on Petition Seeking Case Details

Ludhiana: Sandeep Pathak, a Rajya Sabha member who switched allegiance from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In his petition to the court, Sandeep Pathak has requested to be informed whether or not a case has been registered against him by the Punjab government.

The High Court is scheduled to hear Sandeep Pathak’s petition today. In his plea, Pathak has appealed to the High Court to direct the Punjab government to disclose where the two cases allegedly filed against him have been registered, and under which sections of the law they have been invoked.

In his petition, Pathak has stated that for the past few days, rumors have been circulating that the Punjab government has registered two FIRs against him under non-bailable sections. He noted that neither the Punjab government nor the police have, as yet, informed him regarding the location where these FIRs were lodged or the specific sections applied therein. According to reports, Pathak has impleaded the Punjab Police and the Punjab government as parties to his petition.

On May 2, reports suddenly surfaced in the media alleging that the Punjab Police had registered two FIRs against Sandeep Pathak under non-bailable sections. On that day, Sandeep Pathak was at his residence in Delhi; upon receiving this information, he reportedly exited through the back door of his house to evade potential arrest by the Punjab Police.

Two days later, Sandeep Pathak resurfaced and stated that he had absolutely no knowledge regarding where a case had been registered against him or the specific matters involved. Pathak asserted that he had not committed any act that would warrant the registration of an FIR against him.

Following the reports regarding the FIRs, various opposition parties—including the BJP—launched a concerted offensive against the AAP government. Leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party, and even the Chief Minister himself, went so far as to declare that strict action would inevitably be taken against anyone found to have engaged in wrongdoing.

Following such statements by the Chief Minister, Pathak began to suspect that the Punjab Police had indeed registered FIRs against him but were deliberately withholding this information. Consequently, he has now filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking redressal.

Rajinder Gupta Also Challenges Withdrawal of Security Cover in Court

Rajinder Gupta—a Rajya Sabha member who switched from the AAP to the BJP, and the owner of the Trident Group—has also filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the withdrawal of his security cover. Gupta had filed a petition in the High Court challenging a raid conducted on his factory by the Punjab Government’s Pollution Control Board. In that very petition, he also challenged the Punjab Government’s decision to withdraw his security cover.

Harbhajan Singh’s Security Also Withdrawn

Upon his joining the BJP, the Punjab Government had also withdrawn the security cover of former cricketer and Rajya Sabha member Harbhajan Singh. Harbhajan Singh subsequently filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging this move, following which the Court issued orders to enhance his security.
