New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, on Tuesday approved the recommendation to appoint two lawyers as judges of the Kerala High Court. This decision was taken at the Collegium’s meeting held on April 14, 2026.
Which lawyers’names are included
The Collegium has approved the proposal to appoint advocates Preetha Aravindan Krishnamma and Liz Mathew Anthrapper as judges of the Kerala High Court. The statement issued said that after considering both the names, the Collegium found them suitable.
Role of the SC Collegium
The Supreme Court Collegium, consisting of the Chief Justice and the senior-most Supreme Court judge, is the highest body responsible for recommending appointments and transfers in the higher judiciary. The appointment process proceeds based on its recommendations.
How the Appointment Process Works
According to the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP), the proposal for the appointment of a High Court judge is initiated by the Chief Justice of the respective High Court. If the Chief Minister of the state recommends a name, it is also sent to the Chief Justice. The Governor, on the advice of the Chief Minister, then forwards the proposal to the Ministry of Law and Justice of the Central Government.
The Central Government then examines the proposal and gathers necessary inputs. The proposal is then forwarded to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who, after consulting with the two senior-most judges, makes the final recommendation.
Finally, this recommendation is sent to the Ministry of Law, and the appointment is officially notified after the President signs the warrant of appointment.
Further Process
Following the President’s approval, the Secretary of the Department of Justice informs the Chief Justice of the relevant High Court and the State Government. The appointment is then made effective by issuing a notification in the Gazette of India.
