“Scared and Losing Trust”: Unnao Case Convict’s Daughter Opens Letter

New Delhi: Ishita Sengar, daughter of Unnao rape convict Kuldeep Singh Sengar, penned an emotional open letter on Monday, saying her family is “exhausted, scared, and slowly losing trust” after an eight-year legal battle.

The letter came on the same day the Supreme Court stayed the Delhi High Court’s order suspending her father’s life sentence. Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who was convicted of raping a minor girl in 2017, died in police custody a year later. Two of Ishita’s relatives were killed in a car accident in 2019 during the case.

Family endured eight years of silence and harassment

Ishita wrote on X (former Twitter) that her family patiently waited for justice, believing that the Constitution would be enforced and that justice in this country does not depend on noise, hashtags, or public outrage.

She also said that her dignity and right to speak were taken away by calling her the daughter of a BJP MLA. In the letter, Ishita mentioned the constant online threats, threats of rape and murder she receives:

“This hatred is not abstract. It is daily. It is constant. And it breaks something inside.”

She also explained that her family endures insults, mockery, and inhumane behavior every day and is emotionally, physically, and financially exhausted by their silence.

Fear and pressure more than injustice

Ishita said her family wasn’t heard not because the evidence was weak, but because the truth was inconvenient. She expressed a new fear —

“A fear so intense that judges, journalists, institutions, and ordinary citizens are all under pressure to remain silent.”

Her letter is a reminder of the emotional pressure and systemic challenges faced by victim families in high-profile cases.
