Second Phase of the Education Revolution in Punjab

Under the Aam Aadmi Party’s Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab, two models of public welfare—patterned after the previous AAP government in Delhi—stand out as the most prominent initiatives. The first involves providing free medical treatment to the public by establishing ‘Aam Aadmi Clinics’ across the state; the second aims to elevate government education to a standard on par with private schools by opening high-quality institutions, thereby ensuring that the child of the common man, too, can access quality education.

This ensures that the poor do not have to scramble to access expensive private schools. In both these sectors, the Bhagwant Mann government has accomplished significant work in Punjab over the past four years.

Upon the completion of four years in office, the Chief Minister stated in his address that, in the remaining year, they would increase the number of ‘Mohalla Clinics’ to one thousand. These clinics will provide treatment for a wide range of ailments. However, an even more significant announcement was made regarding the launch of the second phase of the ‘Punjab Education Revolution’ during this upcoming year.

He has dubbed this initiative ‘Punjab Education Revolution 2.0’. According to this announcement, revolutionary reforms will be implemented across the school education sector throughout Punjab. To facilitate this, the Punjab government has entered into a partnership with the World Bank. A sum of Rs3,500 crore will be invested in this project; of this, Rs2,500 crore will be provided by the World Bank as financial assistance, while the Punjab government will contribute the remaining Rs1,000 crore.
