Senior IPS officer found dead in Chandigarh; Police suspect suicide

Haryana: Senior Haryana IPS officer Y. Poonam Kumar has died by suicide. He shot himself at his residence (House No. 116) in Sector 11, Chandigarh. Chandigarh Police reached the spot immediately. The reason behind his suicide is not yet known. SSP of Chandigarh Police, Kanwardeep Kaur, has also reached the location.

Y. Poonam Kumar was an ADGP-rank officer. He had been posted at the Police Training College (PTC) in Sunaria, Rohtak on September 29. He was reportedly on leave until October 7, though this has not been officially confirmed. His wife, Aman P. Kumar, is an IAS officer. She was on an official tour to Japan with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and other officials on October 5, and is expected to return to India tomorrow evening.

Meanwhile Chandigarh Police in a statement released said that  information regarding the incident was received around 1:30 PM at Police Station 11 from House No. 116, Sector 11. Following the alert, police personnel from the station, along with senior officers, immediately reached the spot.

The deceased has been identified as Sh. Y. Puran Kumar, an IPS officer of the 2001 batch from the Haryana cadre. Police officials said his body was discovered in a basement room of the house with a gunshot wound.

The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) team was called to the scene, where they conducted detailed videography and photography of the area. Physical and electronic evidence, including the weapon used, was seized. A ‘Will’ and a ‘Final Note’ were also recovered from the spot along with other materials.

The body was shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination. The police stated that the autopsy will be conducted by a board of doctors once the officer’s wife, currently away on an official visit, returns on October 8.

Further investigation into the incident is underway, officials confirmed.
