    Sensex falls 849 points, Nifty down 256 amid US tariff impact on Indian imports

    Mumbai, August 26: On the second trading day of the week, Tuesday, August 26, the stock market fell. The Sensex fell 849 points (1.04%) and closed at 80,787. The Nifty also fell 256 points (1.02%) and is trading at 24,712.

    Out of the 30 Sensex stocks, 25 fell and only 5 rose. A total of 17 stocks, including Sun Pharma and Tata Steel, fell by 1% to 3.2%. Shares of HUL and Maruti rose by 2.35%.

    Out of the 50 stocks of Nifty, 37 declined and 13 rose. All except the NSE FMCG index declined. Metal, pharma, IT, realty and banking indices fell by more than 2%.

    Markets fall due to US tariff notification

    The US government has issued an official notification imposing an additional 25% tariff on imports from India. This tariff imposed as a penalty will come into effect from 9:31 am on August 27 as per Indian time.

    President Donald Trump announced this tariff on August 6 as a penalty for buying oil from Russia. Earlier, citing trade deficit, a 25% tariff was imposed on India from August 7. This means that the overall tariff on Indian goods will now be up to 50%.

    Decline in global markets

    • In Asian markets, Japan’s Nikkei was trading 1% down at 42,380 and Korea’s Kospi was 0.83% down at 3,183.

    • Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rose 0.22% to 25,773 and China’s Shanghai Composite was trading flat at 3,888.

    • On August 25, the US Dow Jones closed down 0.77% at 45,282. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.22% and the S&P 500 fell 0.43%.

    FIIs sold shares worth Rs 2,466 crore on August 25

    • On August 25, foreign investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 2,466.24 crore in the cash segment. At the same time, domestic investors (DIIs) made net purchases of Rs 3,176.69 crore.

    • So far in the month of August, foreign investors have sold shares worth Rs 28,217.26 crore. Meanwhile, domestic investors have made net purchases worth Rs 69,360.20 crore during this period.

    • In the month of July, foreign investors sold shares worth a total of Rs 47,666.68 crore. At the same time, domestic investors also made net purchases of Rs 60,939.16 crore in the month.

    There was a decline in the market yesterday

    Earlier, yesterday, i.e. on 25th August, there was a decline in the stock market. Sensex closed at 81,636 after rising by 329 points. Nifty also rose by 98 points, it reached the level of 24,968.
