Mumbai: Indian equity benchmark indices opened sharply higher on Monday, with the Sensex gaining more than 400 points and the Nifty 50 moving above the 22,500 mark, as easing crude oil prices and positive global cues lifted investor sentiment.
The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 453.04 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 72,362.74, while the NSE Nifty 50 rose 125.75 points, or 0.56 per cent, to 22,547.70 around 9:25 a.m.
Sensex, Nifty Rebound After Eight-Week Losing Streak
The recovery comes after both benchmark indices recorded their eighth consecutive weekly decline, their longest losing streak in 25 years. The Sensex and Nifty had fallen 8.4 per cent and 8.7 per cent, respectively, during the eight-week period.
Market sentiment was supported by upbeat Asian markets, a positive close on Wall Street and a decline in crude oil prices. Investors are also awaiting the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy decision later this week.
HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance Among Gainers
Financial stocks led the early gains, with Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance, ITC, NTPC and Grasim Industries among the prominent Nifty gainers. Bajaj Finance rose more than 3 per cent in early trading.
HDFC Bank was also among the stocks in focus after the appointment of Anup Bagchi as its new MD and CEO, while the bank’s quarterly business update showed strong growth in gross advances.
Infosys, which had been among the previous session’s strong performers, traded lower in early deals, slipping around 1.2 per cent at one point.
The market’s opening gains were broad-based, with banking, metals and oil and gas stocks supporting the recovery, while healthcare, pharma and IT stocks lagged.
