Mumbai: India’s benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty ended the week with marginal losses, snapping a four-week winning streak, as escalating tensions in West Asia and rising crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment. However, a strong rally on the final trading session helped the markets recover much of their earlier losses.
The Nifty 50 declined 0.26 per cent for the week but gained 1.02 per cent on Friday to close at 24,206. The BSE Sensex rose 827 points, or 1.08 per cent, on the last trading day to settle at 77,569, though it still ended the week 0.25 per cent lower.
Geopolitical Tensions Trigger Early Volatility
Markets witnessed sharp swings during the week as renewed military tensions in West Asia and uncertainty surrounding US-Iran peace negotiations prompted investors to adopt a cautious approach.
Higher crude oil prices initially added to concerns, leading to profit booking across sectors.
Banking, IT Updates Support Market Recovery
Investor confidence improved in the latter half of the week after encouraging first-quarter business updates from banking and information technology companies boosted expectations for the upcoming earnings season.
A decline in global crude oil prices from nearly $76 per barrel to around $71–72 per barrel, along with a rebound in global technology stocks and optimism over diplomatic efforts, further supported the recovery.
FIIs Remain Net Buyers
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net buyers for most of the week, recording net inflows of approximately ₹4,670 crore.
Among sectoral indices, realty, consumer durables and IT outperformed, while media, FMCG and chemical stocks underperformed.
The broader market remained resilient, with the Nifty Midcap100 rising 1.36 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap100 gaining 1.26 per cent during the week.
Investors Eye Earnings and Inflation Data
Market participants will closely monitor Q1 FY27 corporate earnings, India’s inflation data, US core inflation figures and commentary from US Federal Reserve officials for further market direction.
Analysts believe sustained earnings growth and easing global inflationary pressures could improve investor confidence and support foreign investment inflows in the coming months.
